RATS PLAGUE CONTROL To control rats the most important thing is to inspect and to verify the presence of rodents. The more important signs are: nibbled objects, excrements and urine stain, scent, tracks, nests and excavations, tail marks and alive or dead rats. When rats are visible in daylight or in places with people, we can be sure that there is a great plague that forces them to go out during the dayhours in order to go on living, since the rats are night and twilight animals. When they get out of their shelters, they prefer to move close to the corners of the walls, in order to feel secure. The field rats normally take the short route, even letting themselves to be noticed.
Rats are very prolific animals; when we notice one, there could be more than twenty in the nest. Some investigations during the last years proved that rats are very intelligent animals and have a great sense of smell, which is very developed, with a capacity of selecting their food avoiding the bad one, they can also distinguish any ingredient in a dish, like sugar, salt, irritating substances and diverse flavours. For that reason they are very suspicious to the new food. When facing a likely toxic substance rats show an innate form of learning that allows them to associate the characteristics of a certain food and their metabolic consequences; if they fall ill for having consumed a contaminated food a many months lasting aversion to that sort of food will be created. In the herd they send a submissive individual of the colony to taste the suspicious food; according to the result, go on living or death, the rest of the herd will test the food. The human being is capable to look for toxic substances and to deceive the rats, inducing them into eating the poison, but these animals use their defense mechanism to avoid it. This is why the rat poisons usually are not very effective, only the lethal dose of strong poisons achieves its purpose - its disadvantage is that it has to be consumed by every individual of the nest. The poison to kill rats is very dangerous for humans, especially for children, domestic animals and also for the rest of the animals. The dead rats are also an important sanitary danger for the human beings because the water gets poisoned and lots of diseases are transmitted. The rest of the animals are in danger when they eat the dead rats.
Since ancient times the rats have been moving all over the world thanks to sailing In short the rat is an animal that adapts itself to any environment. It can be found in the whole world but Antarctica, where the cold prevents them from surviving; moreover the rats possess a very developed genetic resistance to various poisons that in other animals are mortal, and they are transmitters of many diseases. For that reason they are an undesired companion for the man. It is necessary to stress that the rats represent a great contamination food potential and environmental pollution.
