KILLING
OR CAPTURING VOLES -
METHODS.

Voles are transmitters of
dangerous diseases to human beings.
One way could be introducing a petrol-soaked
rag into the entrance to their burrows, or a mothball in the tunnels through the holes
of the burrow, and covering them later. There is a type of cartridge that
goes off when the mole perforates the galleries. The traps to hunt them are
very useful when the voles concentration is not high; they are hunted alive
and then they are let free in other areas, as far as possible from the
affected area. It is a good idea, as a precaution, to controll the excess of
earthworms and worms in the soil,
since they serve as food for these rodents. One must keep an eye on the poisoned traps or the
canned or bottled poisons left next to the burrows, so that the poison
does not affect directly other animals; one must also follow thouroughly the
instructions .

The control of burrows and galleries in
the fields is fundamental to locate voles.
In the year 2005 the government of Spain prohibited burning
stubble of permanent pastures with the aim of avoiding fires. Since then many agrarian associations have requested the
permissions for the recovery of this custom, with the aim of eradicating the plagues of voles. To verify his efficiency in
Castilla y Leon they experienced with the controlled burning; after a few weeks
the conclusion was that the temperature was not high enough to kill the
voles and that there was a very negative environmental impact threatening
small animals (insects, rabbits, reptiles, etc.). On the other
hand the voles disappear to other zones to colonize them, carrying the
problem with them without solving it.

The burning of the stubble for the eradication of
plagues of voles is prohibited by the authorities.
