RATS AND MICE CURIOSITIES
-
Rats have been hated
and erradicated throughout the time for being a many diseases vector.
Since few years ago rats have been converting themselves into the key to
many researches and medical advances. This great enemy of man saved many
lives thanks to years of taming that made rats easy to be looked for. They
are docile subjects for experimental studies and with genetic conditions
similar to humans. In the last research conducted by the Belgian
investigator Dirk Adang was proved that rats mortality rate increases,
after long exposures to radiation waves emitted by mobile phones and hi-fi
nets. During the experiment they exposed 18 rats to differrent radiation
waves levels, for two hours daily, during 18 months. The mortality rate
increased in 70%.

Laboratory rats are used for investigations and
disease controls.

The
rodents have a much higher resistance to hostile environments than any other
mammals, including the human being. Experiments were conducted in Eniwetok
atoll (Marshall Islands) after nuclear tests, proving the rats could
survive on eating roots and waste; they could dive to gather mollusks and crustaceans fighting
against fish for food.

The field mice have
a huge birth rate increase without any scientific explanation. But simultaneously
with a momentary birth rate increase this is preceeded by a high mortality without any explanation whatsoever. Also it
has been observed that rats have body functions that allow them to
produce their own water when there is water shortage, thus they can feed
during breeding periods.

In
India, in the city of Deshnok there is a very special temple called Karni Mata
where live about 20,000 rats. In this temple the rats are Karni Mata sacred reincarnations
and its sadhus disciples, holy men of hinduism. In
hinduista mythology it is said that Karni Mata, a reincarnation of the
Durga goddess that lived in the 14th century, asked Yama, God of death, to
give back the life to the son of a troubadour. For this God refused to do
it, Karni Mata reincarnated in rats all the killed troubadours and deprived Yama
of those human souls. In this temple everything gets excited when a white rat appears
although the normal thing is to find black rats.
The priest in charge of the temple feeds
them with grain and milk, and the travellers bring food offerings. When
the bell sounds the offering takes place. The well fed rats only run
around for the food and the pilgrims consider a blessing being able to
taste these foods.

The
rats can jump up to a meter and even fall from 20 meters high without
hurting themselves. They are able to nibble cement, glass and
aluminum, etc. for to construct his nest or in his necessity to nibble. It
has been verified they can get to bite even more than ten various types of
food,
of which they will only feed on three.
