SNAILS AND SLUGS ELIMINATION METHODS.
 

   To fight against the slugs or snails we should use bait traps with granules containing active components metaldehyde or metiocarb, that is spread all over the ground and near the plants in small piles. It contains a special attractive substance that makes the snails come and eat it, producing their consequent death a few days later. This type of treatments are pretty dangerous for using toxic products, both for children and for birds or pets that may consume these grains.

In a little time a plague of snails can spoil a crop.

     The bait traps generate an attractive substance to snails and slugs; once they enter the trap the snail or slug can not find the way out and die drowned in the liquid bait. They are natural methods of eradicating these mollusks, without endangering the environment.

     It can also be used a home-made remedy to fight against snails and slugs pests - to bury a small  bottle filled with water or beer and the humidity and the smell of beer will attract them and they will finally get drowned. It can also be used lettuce or green cabbage leaves, or pieces of cardboard or plastic which are placed over the ground in the evening, and the next morning there will be a lot of snails on them. We all know the sodium chloride characteristic to remove the slugs, by killing them when touched by this substance; but this substance also impacts a lot on the earth and on the other plants, even eliminating the last ones. It can also be placed, around plants or plant containers, copper paper or tinfoil which produce some electrical reacions to them and prevent their passing through for being sharp surfaces. The slugs and snails seek refuge during the day in cold and wet places under bricks, large stones, pieces of wood, and so on. It is important to know these places and to monitor them daily.

The slugs need damp land and they feed when the temperature exceeds 50ºF.

     Snails and slugs have many natural predators, such as snakes, beetles, frogs, including other species of snails. Other predators are some birds like chickens, pheasants, ducks and snail-eating sparrowhawk which is a specialist in pond snails. They are used as food bait for reptiles and other pets. When in the stage of eggs they are devastated by centipede.

     Human beings are some very dangerous predators for the snails, beside the obviuos threat of stepping on them; there is also the water contamination and the acid rain which destroy their shell, poisoning and killing them. Another natural and healthy way of eradication is their use in cooking, being part of the Mediterranean cooking since immemorial times, especially in Spain and France, where snails are considered a delicacy. For many people it is a pleasurable collecting snails and cooking them in different ways.

Snails are very used in the Mediterranean cuisine.
