ATTRACTING PHEROMONES FOR THE TORTRICIDE OF THE APICAL YOLK OF THE PINE

Moth with a general greyish-brown color with dark spots of various colors forming characteristic patterns.
They have a 23mm wingspan. The damage they produce is due to the gnawing and galleries that the caterpillar makes in the buds and shoots
to procure food. As a consequence, the guides can be defoliated at their tip, and if the attack is repeated year after year, the death of the shoots stimulates the development of a large number of nearby adventitious buds. The pines present in areas where the plague is repeated remain squat, without a dominant terminal guide and with a twisted stem.
The pines in the Cembra and Parrya sections are practically immune to this pest, while in the Epitys section few species are resistant to its attacks. The most attacked species is Pinus sylvestris, also Pinus nigra, Pinus pinea and Pinus radiata.
They have only one generation per year, but the periods of each state can vary greatly from one year to another. Adults generally appear between June and July. The life of the males is little more than a week; Mating and laying occurs during the first twenty-four hours after emergence. The eggs hatch after 12 days if the average temperature is 18.5 ºC, for each degree less than that average temperature, hatching is delayed one day. The caterpillar builds a silky tube and later slides into a yolk. The winter is spent in a dormant state, resuming its larval activity again to pupate for about fifteen or twenty days, after which the adult finally emerges.
