ATTRACTING PHEROMONES FOR ELM BULLET INSECT
It is an insect belonging to the Curculionidae family that causes serious damage to the Elms. It is considered to be the vector of graphiosis, the most serious disease of the elm.
The adult measures 1.9 to 3.1 mm in length; it is dark brown with reddish elytra; the postero-lateral margin of sternites 2, 3 and 4 have small teeth; males have a flattened head with a crown of long, fine mushrooms; in females the head is arched and almost glabrous.
It causes perforations in elms and is a vector in the spread of graphiosis: to achieve sexual maturation, adults need to feed on healthy elms, thereby transporting spores of the fungus that causes graphiosis (Ophiostoma), which causes the transmission of diseases from the infested trees to the healthy ones, which when they become ill become the right place for feeding and reproduction of this scolithid.
