Cuelure is a specific attractant for Melon Fly, which belongs to the family of hydroxyphenols and this acetate has been shown to be a powerful sexual attractant for Melon Fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae) and for Queensland Fly (Bactrocera Tryoni) .
The adult is about 6 mm long. It is characteristic the appearance of its wings, its long third segment of the antennae, its reddish yellow back with yellow spots and also yellow head with black spots.
The eggs are white, elliptical and about 2 mm long. They are almost flat on the ventral part and convex on the dorsal part. They are often curved longitudinally.
The larva is cylindrical, worm-shaped, elongated. The last stage measures between 7.5 and 11 mm in length.
The pupa varies from yellowish brown, whitish to red, and is about 5 mm in length.
The development period from egg to adult varies between 12 and 28 days. The female can lay up to 1,000 eggs that are normally laid on young fruits, but they also lay them on plant stems. The eggs are deposited inside the plant by means of the ovipositor of the female.
The pupal stage normally develops on the ground. It can have between 8 and 10 generations a year.
At least 125 species of plants are affected. Mainly legumes, bitter melon, winter melon, cucumber, eggplant, beans, pilgrim squash, luffa, melon, pepper, pumpkin, tomato, watermelon, zucchini and others.
